Press Release Body: Water Quality Index (WQI) integrates the data pool generated
after allocating due weights to the different parameters. Water Quality Index can
play a big role in mitigating the water characteristics problems often-encountered
in different surface water bodies. The present study of WQI is based on the analysis
of samples of water collected from various locations along the stretch of Ganga from
Murshidabad district to South 24-Parganas of West Bengal at various seasons during a
year and is subsequently formulated by DELPHI process and the results obtained for
each sample tested, is reported. The formulation of Water Quality Index has been
approached by mainly two different methods, i.e aggregative method of index and
multiplicative method of index and the water properties of river Ganga is compared
using WQI.
